As I tossed the CR-V keys back to our fleet manager for the last time, I had a small twinge of sadness, knowing the Honda and I were parting ways for good. It felt premature -- I wasn't finished enjoying my time with this right-sized pillar of the compact CUV market. It reminded me of that feeling you get when you have to move out of a good apartment, or when your parents relocate for new jobs, taking you out of the school where you've just started making good friends.
The CR-V's voluminous cargo area, quick-folding seats, flat floor, low cargo-load height, and wide, easy-to-open liftgate catapulted it to staff favorite status. It became the default support vehicle for many a producer of the numerous Motor Trend photo/video productions. The Honda got lots of attention from staffers who needed a practical machine for all the car testing, photo shooting, and television filming we tackle on a daily basis.One of these shoots had me chasing three high-horsepower German convertibles over the serpentine asphalt of Grand Escalante in southern central Utah. Keeping up with the sports cars at higher altitude meant dropping the CR-V's transmission into lower gears and revving the engine. Although at times the CR-V was not thrilled to have its tires pushed to the limit, or its brakes repeatedly called upon, it carried on with surprising agility. Its ride got unsettled only on the oddest of pavement anomalies, and the vehicle remained planted and acceptably damped. Some credit goes to Honda for dropping ride height by 1.4 inches from that of the last-gen CR-V.
On a few occasions, the heavy hustling went too far, exposing a lack of steering communication and eventually resulting in an absence of assurance when approaching full tilt. The 185 hp from the 2.4-liter four does the job, but the engine can sound abrasive under hard acceleration. Yet even when the CR-V is carrying two passengers and a significant amount of gear, the 163 lb-ft of torque is enough to keep the car appropriately on point. But extensive periods of high revving and high speeds did a number on fuel economy for that trip, resulting in a noticeable drop in miles per gallon
