After a big mid-cycle refresh last year that included a re-designed exterior, an upgraded interior, and improved fuel economy, the 2013 Honda Pilot soldiers on without many changes. Unlike many of its competitors, the 2013 Pilot has a single engine and transmission pairing - a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is an available option. The 2013 Pilot is rated 18/25 mpg city/highway in front-drive form, and 17/24 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Back in 2011 we gathered the pre-refresh Honda Pilot 4WD Touring up with its three-row crossover competitors - namely the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9, and Toyota Highlander. In our comparison test, the Pilot placed fifth, beating only the Ford Explorer. Though it placed near the bottom, the Pilot exhibited some positive traits. We said that the Pilot's engine sounded sporty and refined, while it handled like a Honda should. Unfortunately that wasn't enough to overcome the loud and noisy cabin and jarring ride.
For 2013 Honda has simplified the design of the Pilot's center stack, added a high-resolution 8-inch display, and made a rearview camera, Bluetooth, and three-zone climate control standard.
